LibriVox recording of X. Y. Z. - A Detective Story, by Anna Katharine Green. Read by Carolin Kaiser.
"Sometimes in the course of his experience, a detective, while engaged in ferreting out the mystery of one crime, runs inadvertently upon the clue to another. But rarely has this been done in a manner more unexpected or with attendant circumstances of greater interest than in the instance I am now about to relate.
For some time the penetration of certain Washington officials had been baffled by the clever devices of a gang of counterfeiters who had inundated the western portion of Massachusetts with spurious Treasury notes. Some of the best talent of the Secret Service had been expended upon the matter, but with no favorable result, when, one day, notice was received at Washington that a number of suspicious-looking letters, addressed to the simple initials, X. Y. Z., Brandon, Mass., were being daily forwarded through the mails of that region; and it being deemed possible that a clue had at last been offered to the mystery in hand, I was sent northward to investigate." (Excerpt from chapter 1)

I enjoyed this short work by AKG just as much as I've enjoyed her longer novels, even though it is different from her earlier works. Once again there's a good mystery, sound detective story, and excellent writing. The narrator's voice is lovely. She has an accent that, in my opinion, does not deter from her reading but rather makes it more enjoyable. I definitely recommend listening to this book!

This is the first book by this author that I have ever read or listened to. I am listening to all the books available on librivox because I enjoyed this one so much! Terrific novella with a masterly grip on the techniques needed to put together a wonderful mystery story. The crime solved is not even the crime that our detective sets out to solve! Terrific reading.

I agree with Mike, this was a very good story, well written and well read.
It's on the shorter side, so if you are looking for an entertaining mystery that is also pretty quick, this one is for you.

While following a counterfeiting ring, the hero stumbles upon a murder. Rather than show his hand, he decides to step fully into the role. Let's see how he handles this case of mistaken identity.
AKG has so many different styles of story telling. I have read as many of her novels as I have listened to them, and they are excellent. This is no exception.
Reader is excellent, I love her soft voice and lilting accent.
